Title: Yalwulyuku Ngapa Jukurrpa
(Ceremony for Water)
Ngapa is Warlpiri for water/rain and Jukurrpa are ancestral creation stories. Yawulyu are women’s ceremonies (paint, dance, song) that
express and pay respect to Jukurrpa. Here many women gathered with their kuturu (dancing sticks) to take part in a ceremony for Ngapa at
Mikanji, a soakage north-west of Yuendumu. This Dreaming travelled great distances through Warlpiri country. Two Jangala rainmakers sang the rain, unleashing a giant storm. At Mikanji the storm was picked up by kirrkarlanji (brown falcon) and taken further north. At Puyurru, the falcon dug up a giant Warnayarra (rainbow serpent). The serpent carried water with it to create Jillyiumpa salt lake and beyond making sites along the way.
