Josephine from the UK with a very cute Nancy bag made with Angilyiya’s Rockholes design from @papulankutjaartists .. she’s very impressed. Took it on a Yellow Waters Cruise in Kakadu this week and it got soaked on the floor of the boat - but now shows no sign of neglect!

Always a blast seeing an older bag still in use. Clare got this Juliette bag from Ikuntji Artists a while back - it’s one of ours. The fabric is Puli Puli by Keturah Zimran. It’s been in daily use for a few years and still going strong. Might have to get the Juliette back into production.

This weeks Guardian issue features me😝, you’ll see me in one of Yalanji Arts x Linda Jackson pieces. By designer Vanessa Cannon, I wear her fish trap design with pride after hearing what brought their collection together. Yalanji Arts’ theme for 2023-2024 is ‘Under Fire’ thus referring to to the failed referendum, the effects of climate change and the wars in Ukraine and Palestine. Their collection represents fabric designs showing important Yalanji Totems (ancestral being) and objects of cultural significance in distress by using ‘surreal’ colour combinations.

Marvellous Marcia has done it again. Magicked up a fabulous look by re-imagining a terrific @sheeshskirts with Ngambi design (Bula’Bula Arts) with some appliqué from Peter Gambung’s Lurrpu (white cockatoos) fabric print .. also Bula’Bula Arts. Just had to video it.

It’s always a treat to find a (new) fabric designer/artist whose work knocks me out. Naomy Briston came into @songlines_arts a while back and showed me some photos of her work. She’s new only to me - she’s a Larrakia artist and has been hand printing (with very limited facilities) for years and is such a talent! She’s sent collections down the Country to Couture runway. @naomybriston

Then I was lucky enough to find this shirt at her stand on the Sunday morning of @darwinartfair - perfect fit for @lawrence_duru

A surprise catch-up at DAAF was with Laurie and the fabulous crew from @erubarts in the Torres Strait. She and I had only ever met by email and phone when I did some consulting with the team more than a decade ago (two consecutive Business Plans). It was terrific to meet in person at last . So good to see her rocking a bag in Graham Badari’s Stone Country Animals design from @injalakarts . She absolutely raved about how much she loves her bag and how well it’s done over the years and miles. It does still look pretty fresh 👌. It was made by the wonderful @kravanhouse.
Hmmm, we discontinued that design but may need to have a rethink 🤔

Congratulations Erub, looking fine as always. Their stand had nearly sold out (as usual).

Visited the Babbarra Designs stand at Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair and saw this gorgeous skirt from afar. Had to get a 📸 … The wearer turned out to be Helen Bond-Sharp, one of the co-founders of Babbarra Women’s Centre and the skirt is vintage Lino printed fabric from the early days of printing in the community. Beautiful 🤩. Helen and husband David were long term residents of Maningrida and facilitated many great initiatives through Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation.

Oh my beating heart! Spent Thursday evening running around @darwinartfair on opening night to catch up with people and celebrate the unique culture of First Nations Australian artists. Of course superb hand-printed fabrics jumped into my arms …. asking to be transformed into bags. 12 kg later 🙄

Looking forward to going back this morning for another circuit before heading to set up at @mindilmarket

Bumped into so many cool people at @darwinartfair - and these three were probably the coolest. Samson, Sprotin and Joe, artists and fabric designers, from @injalakarts . They were wearing freshly made shirts in their own designs. Injalak’s 35 Years of Printing exhibition is on display (photos coming soon) featuring 35 beautiful new fabric designs. This year has seen CEO Tess pull together a great team including the Board, arts workers, printers and consultants/friends of Injalak - Karen Coote, Lorna Martin, @elizabethmartinartist and @judewhiteart to get the print workshop humming again and the exhibition printed and hung. Amazing ⭐️ - love your work everyone!!!!!
