Not just blues are being printed at @merrepenarts today! Tested out @kieren_karritpul ‘s String Bags print - this is the first screen on cotton. It looked so good we decided to print it as a single screen. Gorgeous 🤩

Another day at @merrepenarts - another amazing print! Gracie Kumbi’s Stingray design. Printed with @kieren_karritpul and Nola. Have not seen this one printed very often and very happy to discover the screen is in great condition. It does have another screen that can be used with lots more background detail, but today we went for simplicity and clean lines. It’s in the heat setting oven cooking overnight.

Update: the model is Marcia - who is an arts worker and fabric printer!!
Collaborations make the world go round 🌏 When I was in Ramingining at @bulabulaarts in March we printed some wonderful lengths, including new designs. As we placed the two different pinks on the table (half and half) then printed and offset printed them both with Serena’s butterflies I wondered what might be made, hopefully using both. After I left @blackcatcouturent rocked up and started playing with them. The frocks shown here are examples of her magic 🤩 can’t wait to see the Country to Couture collection(s) for 2025.

Meanwhile, Black Cat Couture, led by Marcia Russell in Darwin, creates unique garments that blend vintage sewing patterns from the 1950s to the 1990s with First Nations textiles.

Two very talented brothers at @merrepenarts in Nauiyu (Daly River). Kieren chose the fabric and colours for print and Aaron (the artist/designer) dropped in on his lunch break and was grabbed for a picture. The iconic design is Crocodile Skin and it’s a two screen design. So good to be supporting the resumption of hand printing on country. Now let’s hope the heat setting oven works 🤞

Nola Jimarin on the heat gun, drying a print of her own Yams design. She also chose the fabric and colours. Nola is an Arts Worker at @merrepenarts as well as an artist. This is a lovely single screen design with lots of detail. It’s been such a joy supporting the team in getting on-country printing happening again.

So chuffed to be invited to hang out with the @merrepenarts crew this week!! We fired up the on-country fabric printing workshop after a long hiatus. For our first (test) run Kieren chose to print his brother Aaron’s Crocodile Skin design (a classic!) for an order. One screen needed a bit of love and repair but it worked!! Thanks guys 🙏

Edit: I mixed up my Insta accounts. This was for my personal account but will leave it here anyway. It’s part of my backstory 😘

Today is blob day (in Guatemala). Taking time out from movement and decision making, just sitting lakeside. Have been dragging this fairly hefty book all around Guatemala - urging myself to take it out to finish it. I started it in Darwin last year and ended up in floods of tears when I discovered it was, partly, the story of (Roger) Yilarama. He was the beautiful man who, with his wife Margaret, took care of my children Lily and Louis for 6 days a week for 2 years in Oenpelli, Arnhem Land in the early 1990s, when I was managing Injalak Arts for the first time. I had no idea that I would one day learn so much more about him.
I put it aside. Then packed it for this trip. Yesterday I reopened it, it’s time. It’s still a tough read. This is the place to read it. We’ve passed through the part that was personally tragic for me. We’re now deep into the later stages of the story of Neville and Donydji and the chronicling of acts of negligence, ineptitude, insensitivity, systemic racism and bastardry that characterise the ‘management’ of indigenous affairs in Australia (by non-indigenous people and authorities). Plus the connection between Vietnam vets and the community. I can feel Neville’s frustration and rage and the profound sadness lying beneath it as he witnesses large and small acts of sabotage yet rallies again and again to support and advocate and maintain the love. My PSTD is fully triggered and I’m wiping tears away as I look at the water.
Don, thank you so much for this. Can’t begin to tell you how much your chronicle means to me.
