And, so I made this dress Nancy in the Dress up the Hill. But Nancy wasn’t looking for water, instead she was looking for bush food, Langkwa and bush medicine all through her beautiful Country. But look what she found...a fish and some owls and a kaarnta (head-ring) instead!”

Stevie is on a school trip to Darwin, walked into our @mindilmarket stall and spotted this Frida tote … and that was it. She wasn’t deterred by her friends telling her that her mum would kill her for buying it. I only had two of these totes and a few Delia bags made from a beautiful Saratoga Lino print from Babbarra Designs in Maningrida in Central Arnhem Land. The Delias went quickly. Great taste Stevie!

Nola Jimarin, from Merrepen Arts in Nauiyu (Daly River) community, with her striking fabric design. A visiting volunteer made this stunning shirt! This print has not had many outings but rumour is that new lengths are on the way. This fabulous art centre full of paintings and fabrics (printed on site and also by partners) and more. The centre is accessible and open to the public Monday - Friday and is a delightful drive from Darwin/Adelaide River.

Sadly I was so overwhelmed by how wonderful everything was and chatting I didn’t take many photos. Next time…. I did leave with a swag (kilos!!) of fabric for @songlines_arts and also for bags.

Gwenyth Mangiru’s design was created as part of the 35 years anniversary celebrations for Injalak Arts. It’s her first ever fabric design and it’s a stunner. 😍
Injalak Arts has a great Etsy shop where fabrics can be bought direct from the art centre in Arnhem Land in remote Australia.

The amazing @_anggiewibowo of Darwin who dazzles us with her frocks. She treats the fabrics with such reverence. This fabric is Mangoes by Martha Lee, hand screen-printed on linen, and can be bought online from @nagulajarndu in Broome.

The absolutely delightful Penny and Geert, from Albury, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a bucket list trip to the Top End. First a cruise from Broome to Darwin via the incredible Kimberley coast. Next is a trip south on the Ghan. Penny was spotted at @mindilmarket with a fab Serena bag she found at Darwin Visitor Info Centre. Then they decided to really celebrate with a Delia bag made with Billabong fabric designed by Patricia Marrfurra of @merrepenartscentredalyriver 🎉🥳

Very excited for our forthcoming Afternoon with Carol Cassidy discussing Weaving, Tradition, Art and Community in Laos at @songlines_arts on 28 September.

Carol is a world traveller and expert artisan and founder of Lao Textiles in Ventiane, Laos. This is a rare opportunity to meet Carol and hear about her life and work. Luckily for us she makes occasional visits to Darwin to visit her daughter, who is studying here. A very busy woman she’s currently curating the first ever national exhibition of Laos textiles for ASEAN.

Join us for a lovely afternoon of nibbles, sips and silk textiles. Yum. Can’t wait!!

Always a blast seeing an older bag still in use. Clare got this Juliette bag from Ikuntji Artists a while back - it’s one of ours. The fabric is Puli Puli by Keturah Zimran. It’s been in daily use for a few years and still going strong. Might have to get the Juliette back into production.

This weeks Guardian issue features me😝, you’ll see me in one of Yalanji Arts x Linda Jackson pieces. By designer Vanessa Cannon, I wear her fish trap design with pride after hearing what brought their collection together. Yalanji Arts’ theme for 2023-2024 is ‘Under Fire’ thus referring to to the failed referendum, the effects of climate change and the wars in Ukraine and Palestine. Their collection represents fabric designs showing important Yalanji Totems (ancestral being) and objects of cultural significance in distress by using ‘surreal’ colour combinations.
