Creative collaboration is a key theme that runs throughout New Exuberance: Contemporary Australian Textiles.

These stunning pieces are the result of a collaboration between Ingrid Verner, of the Verner label and Indigenous artist Lisa Waup. The intricate patterning explores Waup’s family connections and her First Nations heritage, whilst the red stitching echoes her sculptural practice.

And congratulations to Adelaide artist Pierre Mukeba, who has won the Ramsay Art Prize 2019 Lipman Karas People’s Choice award with his work ‘Ride to Church’. At just 24 years of age, Mukeba was the youngest finalist selected for this year’s Ramsay Art Prize. The artist commented, ‘Winning the People’s Choice award is the ultimate confirmation that my voice is being heard and appreciated.’ We interviewed Mukeba in Issue 46 – back issues available on artistprofile.com!

What a delight to have Alicka Brown and her mum Maria come in to visit in these last days of Songlines. They live in Yuendumu, 1800 km away in the Tanami Desert. Alicka has a licensing deal with Spotlight through @warlu_art - her Yarla (Big Yam) design has been printed on fabric. I had some bags and purses made out of the fabric and she spotted a small one and was really pleased. Found the last one I had out back for online stock and she was chuffed. Meanwhile Maria scored a bag in her Seven Sisters design last week. We got a photo!!

Back in the dark ages I was the first manager of Warlukurlangu Artists (1986-88) so it’s always a blast seeing relatives.

This is my last week of trading at @songlines_arts in Darwin. What an amazing time we’ve had!!! Met so many wonderful people - creatives, appreciators, artists (whose art has become fabric), bag tragics, art centre managers and many more - including the German woman who had trekked from South Australia to Darwin trying to locate @flyingfoxfabrics
Andrea (with Charlotte bag) and her mother in law Pam (see next pic wearing her fabulous new suit) have been regulars and so supportive. We had lovely hugs. Thank you all so much for you support and ♥️ and especially those peeps who have been coming in and messaging. It’s frantic right now so am very behind on socials.

Flying Fox Fabrics is absolutely continuing!! FFF is going very strong online (Etsy and website store) and not having to maintain bricks and mortar will free up so much time to update stock, promote, dig through my phone ad socials for photos to share and do markets and pop-ups … beyond Darwin. (Look out!!!)

Have always loved this particular fabric. A total delight to see how good it looks in the hands of a wonderful creative 🙌 - maybe a reprint @babbarradesigns ? 🙏

This was most likely one of my overthought sewing project - 5yrs+
It was the first Aboriginal fabric I’d ever purchased. It was the one that sent me looking for Publisher Textiles - the factory was 10 minutes walk away!

The reasons it took so long:
1. It was expensive - for someone who was sewing for a hobby with no paid job.
2. I didn’t want to cut the artwork to small pieces.
3. I wanted to sew something that I could wear anytime, all the time. It should be Interesting enough for special occasions, yet still wearable to school pick up, groceries, etc. I definitely didn’t want this dress to hang in my wardrobe gathering dust. This is my sewing goal for all my outfit!
4. This turquoise base didn’t look too good near my face but I love the pink & gold flowers too much! So I needed to find a way around it.

Previously I was going to make it as Merchant & Mills’ Trapeze dress with The Assembly Line Box Pleat Dress’ sleeves. I even bought matching buttons.
After that I got distracted - for about 5 years. 🙈
When I saw the RWB event coming up, I knew I had to make something. I always make something new to go to Museum/Art Gallery anyway. It’s my thing!
I dug up this fabric, found a matching stripes.. et voilà!

Details:
Pattern: heavily modified Bloom dress by @makebytfs
* apart from the big sleeves, I also folded the hem forward to show the stripes, instead of the usual backward towards inside the dress.
* Added stripes inside the sleeve frills.

Fabrics:
* Manwak - Mumeka Blooms designed by Deborah Wurrkidj of @babbarradesigns printed locally in Leichhardt by @pubtextiles purchased @mca.store.australia
* Zip in Kiss Metallic by @iamrashidacolemanhale from @rubystarsociety
