Have always loved this particular fabric. A total delight to see how good it looks in the hands of a wonderful creative 🙌 - maybe a reprint @babbarradesigns ? 🙏

This was most likely one of my overthought sewing project - 5yrs+
It was the first Aboriginal fabric I’d ever purchased. It was the one that sent me looking for Publisher Textiles - the factory was 10 minutes walk away!

The reasons it took so long:
1. It was expensive - for someone who was sewing for a hobby with no paid job.
2. I didn’t want to cut the artwork to small pieces.
3. I wanted to sew something that I could wear anytime, all the time. It should be Interesting enough for special occasions, yet still wearable to school pick up, groceries, etc. I definitely didn’t want this dress to hang in my wardrobe gathering dust. This is my sewing goal for all my outfit!
4. This turquoise base didn’t look too good near my face but I love the pink & gold flowers too much! So I needed to find a way around it.

Previously I was going to make it as Merchant & Mills’ Trapeze dress with The Assembly Line Box Pleat Dress’ sleeves. I even bought matching buttons.
After that I got distracted - for about 5 years. 🙈
When I saw the RWB event coming up, I knew I had to make something. I always make something new to go to Museum/Art Gallery anyway. It’s my thing!
I dug up this fabric, found a matching stripes.. et voilà!

Details:
Pattern: heavily modified Bloom dress by @makebytfs
* apart from the big sleeves, I also folded the hem forward to show the stripes, instead of the usual backward towards inside the dress.
* Added stripes inside the sleeve frills.

Fabrics:
* Manwak - Mumeka Blooms designed by Deborah Wurrkidj of @babbarradesigns printed locally in Leichhardt by @pubtextiles purchased @mca.store.australia
* Zip in Kiss Metallic by @iamrashidacolemanhale from @rubystarsociety

Damien hit the print workshop again today (at 8am!!!) and brought along Raphael - grandson of two of Bula’Bula Arts founders. Here they are printing Raphael’s totem Ngambi (spearheads). It was a fun day of training and ink splatters and some gorgeous prints.

Got a bit carried away with filming Selina … wanted to capture the process but kinda forgot I needed to be on the other end of the squeegee.
This is Peter Gambung’s Lorrpu (Sulphur CrestedCockatoos) design on hot pink cotton stretch sateen. Selina is an artist but always happy to jump on the print table. She has a great eye for details and points out our/my mistakes.

Have been having so much fun training up new printers at @bulabulaarts this week. Damien did two lengths today - he picked the screen and colours for this Butterfly print. His family requested this photo - they came in to cheer him on.

Nikki remembers buying this fabric from me when she lived in Gunbalanya and I worked at Injalak Arts - around 7 years ago!
It’s the classic Marebu (Pandanus mats) print in a one-screen simple white on black linen. She used it on the side panels. Elegant and really striking. Kicking myself I didn’t take a video because it moved so well.

Look who I bumped into at the Tactile Arts Christmas Makers Market!!! Sorry about the daggy audio - but wanted to keep it so you can hear Marcia. The designer of this print was Isaiah Nagurrgurrba from Injalak arts and its metallic gold ink on black linen - and was printed in the community workshop. As usual Marcia has worked magic with it.
